Sao Miguel, Portugal
My first stop in Western Europe was in Sao Miguel, Portugal. From Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, to Sao Miguel, Portgual, the distance travelled is approximately 7997 Km. I visited Sao Miguel for the week of June 23rd - 29th, 2012. The flight is 13 hours and 14 minutes if flown direct, but there is no direct flight and therefore has two stops along the way with a 17 hour and 17 minute layover for the first stop, and a 5 hour layover for the second stop, making the total flight 35 hours and 31 minutes. The cost for this is approximately $1939 for a one way trip from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, to Sao Miguel, Portugal.
While staying in Sao Miguel, I stayed at the Caloura Hotel Resort at a price of $189 per night. This is a four star hotel and is really beautiful and spacious, as expected.
While visiting Sao Miguel, I visited what is known as "The Puddle Of Kiss". The puddle of kiss is beautiful natural hot springs, which is one of the amazing things nature created. The locals here are very friendly and have great hospitality.
The next place I toured was the Gruta Do Carvao which is known as lava tubes which is just another way of saying a volcanic tunnel. This was so far my favourite tour on the whole trip because it was so unique, and I had never been inside a volcanic tunnel.
The next tour I went on is pretty famous in Sao Miguel, and is called the Caldeira Das Sete Cidades. There is a legend about two lakes sitting side by side, one blue and one green. You get to witness the legend and it indeed is true. Also, the view from the top is awesome.
The last place I visited while in Sao Miguel was the Caldeira Velha. This is considered a natural wonder because of the natural spring where many choose to swim. The natural spring gets it's water from a beautiful waterfall within. In order to reach the spring, you must walk through what feels like a jungle. The "jungle" smells so exotic and was amazing to see the way nature takes its form.
